The short answer

The Garden Route is the belt of lagoons, beaches and forest running, on the broadest definition, about 300 km from Witsand in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. Plettenberg Bay, Nature's Valley and Knysna are the big wedding draws. Expect rain in any season, check who manages your spot, and fly guests into George or Gqeberha.

Garden Route weddings sell themselves on the photographs: lagoons, forest that runs down to the sea, and long beaches backed by mountains. Getting from the photograph to a wedding that works means knowing where the Garden Route actually is, which towns suit which kind of wedding, what the weather does, how guests get there and who gives permission for a ceremony outdoors.

This guide focuses on the eastern end, closest to us: Plettenberg Bay, Nature’s Valley, Knysna and the Tsitsikamma. Tarika is based in Jeffreys Bay, works in the Tsitsikamma, Nature’s Valley and Plettenberg Bay, and travels further along the Garden Route when couples ask.

What does the Garden Route cover?

Ask three people where the Garden Route starts and you’ll get three answers. The broad definition is a stretch of about 300 km of coast from Witsand in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape’s Tsitsikamma. George is its largest city and main administrative centre, and its towns include Mossel Bay, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley.

Two other boundaries are worth knowing:

  • The district. The Garden Route District Municipality, formerly Eden, is in the Western Cape only. Its local municipalities are Kannaland, Hessequa, Mossel Bay, George, Oudtshoorn, Bitou (which includes Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley) and Knysna.
  • The provincial border. The Bloukrans River, crossed by the N2 on the Bloukrans Bridge, separates the Western Cape from the Eastern Cape. Nature’s Valley is on the Western Cape side; Storms River and the rest of the eastern Tsitsikamma are in the Eastern Cape.

Running through all of it is the Garden Route National Park, formed in 2009 from the old Tsitsikamma and Wilderness national parks and other land. It has three sections: Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma.

The border matters more than you’d think for a wedding, because it changes which municipality, which rules and sometimes which suppliers apply.

Why choose a Garden Route wedding?

What it does well:

  • Variety in a short drive. Lagoons, forest, beaches and mountains sit closer together here than almost anywhere else on the coast.
  • Calmer air than the Eastern Cape bays. Weather Spark’s averages put the windiest month in Knysna (October) at about 12 km/h, against about 20 km/h in Gqeberha.
  • A holiday for guests. Guests can turn the wedding into a week away, which makes the travel feel worth it.

What to plan around:

  • Rain in any season. SANParks notes that rain falls in the park throughout the year, mostly at night. An outdoor wedding needs a covered plan B whatever the month.
  • Distances. The towns look close on a map, but Plettenberg Bay to Knysna is about 33 km and Knysna to George about 60 km, so pick a base and keep the wedding near it.
  • December. Peak season along the whole coast, with school holidays filling accommodation early.

Garden Route wedding destinations

Plettenberg Bay

Plett, as it’s usually called, is in Bitou Municipality and is the obvious choice for a beach wedding on the eastern Garden Route. Its beaches include Central Beach, Robberg Beach and the beaches around Beacon Island and the Keurbooms estuary. Robberg Nature Reserve, just outside town, is managed by CapeNature. Plett is about 210 km from Gqeberha and about 163 km from Jeffreys Bay, roughly an hour and three quarters by road.

Expect a busy town in December. Beyond the main beaches, the Keurbooms estuary and the countryside around town widen the choice of settings.

Nature’s Valley

A small village between the forest, the sea and the Groot River lagoon, about 30 km from Plettenberg Bay and at the western end of the Tsitsikamma section of the national park. SANParks’ Nature’s Valley Rest Camp sits on the banks of the Groot River, with a shop and a restaurant and pub in the village. Canoes are for hire on the river, and powerboats aren’t allowed.

It suits small weddings and elopements more than big ones. Facilities are limited, accommodation is limited, and anything inside the national park needs SANParks’ permission.

Knysna

Knysna sits on the northern shore of the Knysna Lagoon, a large estuary that meets the sea between two headlands known as the Heads. North of town, the hills are covered in indigenous forest. That combination of lagoon, Heads and forest gives you a lot of settings in one place. Knysna is about 33 km west of Plettenberg Bay and about 60 km east of George.

Wilderness and George

Further west, Wilderness is home to the Wilderness section of the national park and SANParks’ Ebb-and-Flow Rest Camp. George, the largest city on the Garden Route, has its own airport, which makes it a useful base for guests even if the wedding is elsewhere.

The Tsitsikamma

East of Nature’s Valley, over the provincial border, the Tsitsikamma has the gorges, forest and rocky coast of the national park around Storms River Mouth. It’s wetter and more remote than Plett. Our Tsitsikamma wedding guide covers it in detail, and if you’re looking at forest settings anywhere on the route, read our guide to forest weddings.

Garden Route weather: when to get married

The Garden Route has a mild climate, with rain spread through the year and a slight peak in spring. Weather Spark’s averages for Knysna give February highs of about 25°C and lows around 18°C, and July highs of about 19°C with lows around 11°C. Knysna’s wettest months are October and November, with roughly 720 mm of rain in a year.

Knysna, at least, is generally less windy than Gqeberha or Jeffreys Bay. There the wind most often blows from the west from April to mid-November, from the south from mid-November to mid-February, and from the east for a short spell before April.

Light is similar to the rest of the coast, a few minutes later in the evening than in Jeffreys Bay: sunset in Plettenberg Bay is around 19:35 in mid-December and 17:25 in mid-June.

Putting that together:

  • Summer (December to February) is warm and long-lit but busy, with school holidays until mid-January.
  • Autumn (March to May) is a good compromise: still warm, quieter once Easter is over, and among the calmer months.
  • Winter (June to August) is mild by day and cool at night, with short afternoons. Fine for indoor receptions, harder for outdoor ones.
  • Spring (September to November) brings longer days but the wettest months in Knysna, so plan B gets a workout.

Whenever you marry, agree a written rain plan with a cut-off time. For the Eastern Cape side, our month-by-month guide to the best time for a wedding in the Eastern Cape has the detail.

Getting there and getting around

Guests usually fly into one of two airports:

From To Distance Driving time
George Airport Plettenberg Bay about 103 km about 1 hour 25 minutes
Gqeberha airport Plettenberg Bay about 210 km allow about 2 hours 30 minutes
Jeffreys Bay Plettenberg Bay about 163 km about 1 hour 45 minutes

George Airport has direct flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo and Lanseria) and other South African cities. Gqeberha’s Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport has direct flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, and suits guests combining the wedding with the Eastern Cape coast or Addo. Plettenberg Bay’s small airport has had limited or no scheduled flights in recent years, so don’t plan around it without checking.

If you’re driving between the Tsitsikamma and Plettenberg Bay, note that a section of the N2 near the Bloukrans Bridge is tolled as the Tsitsikamma Toll Route. For overseas guests, our guide to destination weddings in South Africa covers flights, visas and planning from abroad.

Who gives permission for a Garden Route wedding?

Who you ask depends on whose land it is:

Where Who manages it
Inside the Garden Route National Park (Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma sections, including Nature’s Valley’s park areas) SANParks
Robberg Nature Reserve CapeNature
Public beaches and open spaces in Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley Bitou Municipality
Public beaches and open spaces in Knysna (check whether your spot falls in the park’s Knysna section) Knysna Municipality
The Tsitsikamma outside the park, on the Eastern Cape side Kou-Kamma Municipality
Private venues, farms and homes The owner, plus any estate rules

Ask in writing, early, about guest numbers, set-up, sound, alcohol, confetti, vehicle access, times and fees. Inside the national park, SANParks doesn’t allow shells, driftwood or anything else, living or dead, to be removed, and charges conservation fees per person per day. As part of full planning, we apply for permissions on your behalf, and our guide to beach wedding permits in the Eastern Cape explains the process on the Eastern Cape side.

Planning a Garden Route wedding from Jeffreys Bay

We work in Nature’s Valley and Plettenberg Bay, and further along the route on request. Distance changes a few practical things:

  • Travel is its own line. Anything beyond about 60 km from Jeffreys Bay appears on our quote as a separate travel line, so you can see what the distance costs.
  • Third-party costs stay transparent. Suppliers are listed at exactly what they charge, with no commission added.
  • Planning runs remotely. Most of the work happens over WhatsApp, email and video call, with site visits by appointment.

Next steps: choose your town, settle the ceremony site and who gives permission, hold accommodation for guests, and agree the wet-weather plan. See how full planning, styling and on-the-day coordination work, or send us your date and place and we’ll reply within one working day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Plettenberg Bay part of the Garden Route?

Yes. Plettenberg Bay is one of the best-known Garden Route towns, in Bitou Municipality in the Western Cape. It sits towards the eastern end of the route, about 33 km from Knysna and roughly 100 km from George Airport. Nature’s Valley, also in Bitou, is about 30 km further east, close to the border with the Eastern Cape.

Is the Garden Route in the Western Cape or the Eastern Cape?

Mostly the Western Cape. The Garden Route District Municipality is entirely in the Western Cape, but the broader tourism definition runs to Storms River in the Eastern Cape’s Tsitsikamma. The Bloukrans River, crossed by the N2 on the Bloukrans Bridge, marks the provincial border. The Garden Route National Park spans both provinces.

Which airport is closest to Plettenberg Bay?

George Airport, about 103 km away, roughly 1 hour 25 minutes by road, with direct flights from Johannesburg and other South African cities. Gqeberha’s airport is about 210 km away and suits guests who are also visiting the Eastern Cape. Plettenberg Bay’s own airport has had limited or no scheduled flights recently, so check before relying on it.

Do you need a permit to get married on a beach in Plettenberg Bay?

Plan on asking. Public beaches in Plettenberg Bay fall under Bitou Municipality, so start there and ask in writing about numbers, set-up, sound, alcohol and fees. If the spot is in Robberg Nature Reserve, CapeNature manages it; inside the Garden Route National Park, ask SANParks. A ceremony at a private venue needs the owner’s agreement.
